The UK HGV driver shortage has been a headline issue since 2021 and shows no sign of resolving through domestic recruitment alone. Retirements outpace new qualifications, the IR35 changes pushed many owner-drivers out, and post-Brexit EU drivers largely did not return. UK logistics, haulage and distribution companies that want to grow their fleets are increasingly looking at international recruitment through the Skilled Worker visa route. This guide covers how to sponsor HGV drivers in 2026.
Can You Sponsor an HGV Driver?
Yes — HGV drivers are eligible for the Skilled Worker visa under SOC 2020 code 8214 (large goods vehicle drivers). The going rate is £28,200 per year. Since the general Skilled Worker threshold is £38,700, the binding salary constraint depends on whether the role appears on the Immigration Salary List.
Check the current ISL. If SOC 8214 is listed, the threshold drops to the higher of £30,960 or 80% of the going rate (80% × £28,200 = £22,560, so £30,960 applies). If it's not on the ISL, the £38,700 general threshold applies — which is above what many haulage firms pay drivers.
The Licence Conversion Problem
The biggest operational challenge is licence recognition. A driver's foreign HGV licence is not automatically valid in the UK:
Critical Issue for Non-EU Drivers
Drivers from non-designated countries (India, Pakistan, Philippines, Nigeria, South Africa, Brazil) must pass the full UK HGV driving test — theory hazard perception, theory multiple choice, and practical. This typically takes 4–8 weeks after arrival, during which the driver cannot drive commercially. Budget for this gap.
CPC and Tachograph Requirements
Additional Certifications
• Driver CPC — mandatory for all professional HGV drivers in the UK. Initial qualification involves 4 modules; periodic training is 35 hours every 5 years.
• Digital tachograph card — required for recording driving hours. Applied for through DVLA after arriving.
• ADR certificate — required for dangerous goods transport. Additional UK qualification.
Source Countries for HGV Drivers
Where to Source
South Africa — drives on the left (like the UK), strong commercial driving tradition, good English.
India — large pool of experienced commercial drivers. Right-hand-drive experience. Good UK test pass rates with preparation.
Zimbabwe, Kenya — left-hand-drive experience, Commonwealth training.
Philippines — growing pool of professional drivers.
Timeline for an HGV Driver Hire
The licence conversion period is the critical path. Many firms use this time for warehouse or yard work to generate some value while the driver qualifies.
The Economics
Cost Breakdown: One Driver from South Africa, 3-Year Visa, Small Sponsor
Sponsor Licence (if not held)
£611
CoS
£525
ISC (3yr × £480)
£1,440
Visa + IHS (3yr)
£3,824
UK HGV test and CPC training
£1,500–£2,500
Flight + initial accommodation
£2,500–£4,000
Total all-in
£10,400–£13,500
Compare to the alternative: an unfilled truck generates zero revenue. At £1,000–£2,000 per week in lost haulage margin, 3 months of a parked truck costs £12,000–£24,000.
