Irish garages, dealerships, fleet operators and specialist workshops are all struggling with the same problem: there are not enough qualified motor vehicle technicians in the domestic market. The retirement rate exceeds the apprenticeship completion rate, and experienced MVTs are being poached across employers at escalating salaries. International recruitment through the employment permit system is now a standard workforce strategy for Irish automotive businesses. This guide covers how to hire automotive technicians from outside the EEA in 2026.
Which Permit Route for Automotive Technicians?
Motor vehicle technicians are hired through the General Employment Permit (GEP) route. MVT roles are not on the Critical Skills Occupations List, so CSEP is not available unless the salary exceeds EUR 68,173 (which is rare for MVT roles).
GEP Requirements for MVT Roles
Minimum salary: EUR 36,605 (2026 GEP threshold)
28-day Labour Market Needs Test (LMNT) required
50/50 EEA workforce ratio must be met
Role must not be on the Ineligible List of Occupations (MVT roles are eligible)
Qualification Recognition
International automotive qualifications need to be mapped against Irish standards:
Qualification Pathways
SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) -- the main industry body. Can advise on qualification equivalence.
QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Motor Technology -- the standard Irish MVT qualification. Overseas qualifications from formal apprenticeship systems (South Africa, UK) typically map well.
NCT tester qualification -- specific to Ireland. International technicians cannot conduct NCTs until they hold this certification.
F-Gas certification -- required for vehicle air conditioning. Must be obtained in Ireland or the EU.
Source Countries
Strongest Pools
South Africa -- the primary source. Formal apprenticeship system, strong English, left-hand-drive experience (less relevant in Ireland than the UK). Qualifications map well to Irish standards.
India -- large pool for commercial vehicle and heavy plant mechanics.
Philippines, Zimbabwe -- smaller but growing pools of qualified technicians.
