A Steel Fixer plays a vital role in the construction industry, primarily responsible for assembling and installing steel reinforcement bars (rebar) to support concrete structures. Your daily activities will involve interpreting engineering drawings, measuring and cutting steel bars, tying rebar securely, and ensuring all reinforcement is correctly positioned before concrete pouring. The work environment is primarily on construction sites, often outdoors, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols. You will be equipped with tools such as rebar cutters, tying machines, and measuring tapes, and work alongside other skilled tradespeople including carpenters and concrete finishers. Occasional travel to different sites may be required, and the position involves physical manual labor, including lifting heavy materials. Training programs will be provided for new tools or safety procedures, and there is potential for career progression into supervisory roles or specialization.
**Responsibilities:**
- Read and interpret technical drawings and specifications for reinforcement placement.
- Measure, cut, and bend steel bars to precise dimensions.
- Tie steel reinforcement using binding wire, ensuring proper placement per engineering plans.
- Coordinate with project managers and other trades to ensure timely execution of structural tasks.
- Maintain safety standards by consistently inspecting work areas and using protective equipment.
- Assist in the assembly of rebar cages and formwork before concrete pours.
- Check structures for accuracy and compliance with building codes.
- Keep detailed records of work completed and materials used.
- Operate relevant machinery safely and efficiently.
- Support site logistics regarding material delivery and storage.
**Key Requirements:**
- Valid construction or trade worker certification preferred.
- At least 3 years experience in reinforcement steel work or similar construction trades.
- Good knowledge of construction safety regulations and standards.
- Ability to read technical drawings and specifications.
- Physically fit for manual labor and working outdoors.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with team members.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings or weekends if necessary.
