The owner-operator question
You run the business. You have been trying to fill the same vacancy for four months. Three agencies, two job boards and one very expensive month of ad spend. Someone tells you they hired from South Africa on a Skilled Worker visa and it was done in three weeks. You want to know if that is real.
It is real. The mechanics are simpler than the reputation suggests. This guide covers what you actually have to do, in order, across the three sectors where UK owner-operators most commonly use the Skilled Worker route.
The one thing that matters more than anything else
Which sector are you in?
Construction - what you need
- £41,700 minimum salary (basic only)
- No advertising period - assign CoS immediately
- CSCS card after arrival (not before)
- Sponsor Licence application: 8–10 weeks
- See our UK construction visa guide
Automotive or transport - key differences
- Motor technicians: same £41,700 threshold
- Drivers: DVLA licence exchange mapped before offer
- Driver CPC: verified before shortlisting
- See our UK dealer guide or bus driver step-by-step
The three things that catch first-timers in every sector
- Salary is basic pay only: the £41,700 Skilled Worker minimum is assessed on basic salary. Allowances, overtime, bonuses and flat-rate earnings do not count. Restructure the pay offering before advertising if needed.
- Right to Work check must happen before day one: use the UKVI online service and the worker’s share code before they start, not on day one. Employing without a valid Right to Work check is a civil penalty risk.
- In transport, the visa is not the bottleneck: priority processing delivers the visa in five working days. The DVLA licence exchange is what sets the commercial driving date. These are different processes on different timelines - see our three-layer compliance guide.
What Sponsor Licence compliance looks like day-to-day
Once you are licensed and hiring, three ongoing obligations apply: keep Right to Work records current; report certain changes to UKVI within ten working days (worker leaving, unexplained absence of ten days or more, significant change in role); and track visa expiry dates. For a small operator hiring one or two people per year, this is a spreadsheet and a calendar reminder, not a compliance department.

Frequently asked questions
Can I file the Sponsor Licence application myself?
Yes. The application is submitted through the UKVI online portal. An immigration adviser or agent can help but is not required. Most first-time applicants find the supporting evidence requirements the most time-consuming part.
Is the £41,700 minimum the same for all trades and roles?
It is the standard floor, but the UKVI Appendix Immigration Salary List sets reduced thresholds for some shortage occupations. Check whether the specific SOC code for your role appears on that list - the applicable threshold may be lower.
Can I fire a Skilled Worker if they are not working out?
Yes, on the same employment law basis as any employee. You must report the termination to UKVI within ten working days. The worker’s visa lapses once you stop sponsoring them.
This guide is for UK SME owner-operators and reflects Skilled Worker visa rules as of September 2026. Thresholds, occupation lists, processing times and compliance requirements change - check current UKVI guidance or ask Recruitroo before committing to a hire.
