Hiring a Mechanic From Abroad for Your Irish Garage or Fleet in 2026: What Smaller Operators Need to Know

The small operator question

Owner of a 3-bay workshop: “I’ve been looking for a qualified mechanic for eight months. My accountant says I probably can’t afford the permit process. Is that true?”

It is not true. The permit process itself costs €1,000 per application, refunded at 90% if refused. The salary floor (€36,605 basic from 1 March 2026) is what a qualified mechanic commands in the Irish market anyway. If you can afford to fill the vacancy, you can afford the permit. What most small operators underestimate is the time investment, not the money.

What “smaller operator” means for the permit process

Whether you run a three-bay garage or a fifty-vehicle fleet workshop, the General Employment Permit process is the same. The difference is in the 50/50 EEA workforce rule: if your total headcount is four people and you want to add one non-EEA mechanic, you need at least two of the four to be EEA nationals. For a small operation, this is usually fine - most smaller garages have a predominantly EEA workforce already.

The core checklist for a small operator

  • Confirm the mechanic role is described as a qualified technician (not general mechanic or labourer)
  • Salary at or above €36,605 basic; flat-rate must be supplemented to guarantee this floor
  • 28-day LMNT run on JobsIreland, EURES and one other platform - not just Done Deal
  • 50/50 EEA rule checked: more than half your workforce must be EEA nationals after the hire
  • Trusted Partner registration considered if you plan to hire more than one or two over time

The time investment

The honest answer on time is twelve to sixteen weeks from decision to a mechanic at your bench. The 28-day LMNT is fixed. Permit processing is two to four weeks (Trusted Partner) or four to eight (standard). The D visa for South African nationals adds four to eight weeks running in parallel. If you start in October, you are looking at late January to February for arrival. Factor this against how long you have already been waiting.

Do not use a solicitor charging per permit for a single hire. The permit application is filed by the employer directly on EPOS - it is an online form, not a court document. A recruitment partner or agent can file it at a fraction of the cost of a per-permit legal fee.

Athenry Truck Centre came into the Recruitroo pipeline via Google at €6.6k - a commercial vehicle operator below the large-deal cut, making a practical decision. The process is the same for a three-bay garage as for a group with ten sites; the scale just changes.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sole trader hire a mechanic on an employment permit?

Yes, provided the business is registered and can demonstrate it is a genuine employer. The 50/50 rule applies to total headcount including the proprietor.

Is the permit tied to my garage, or can the mechanic leave?

The General Employment Permit is tied to your company for the first nine months. After that, the mechanic can move to another employer in the same occupation through a change of employer application.

What if I only need a mechanic for one project or season?

Employment permits are not seasonal instruments - they are for genuine ongoing employment. If the need is genuinely temporary, the role design and contract need to reflect a fixed-term arrangement, and the permit process and rationale need to match.
