Can you change jobs on an employment permit?
Yes — this is the biggest change of the 2024 Act. Once you have completed nine months on your first permit (down from twelve), you can move to a new employer via a Change of Employer application that updates your existing permit. For General Employment Permit holders the new role must be in the same occupation; the new employer must meet the standard conditions. Can your family join you in Ireland?
It depends on your permit. Critical Skills Employment Permit holders can be joined by their spouse or partner and children from the outset — and spouses of Critical Skills holders can access the Irish labour market, a genuinely valuable right when comparing offers. General Employment Permit holders can apply for family reunification after a qualifying period, subject to income conditions. What is Stamp 4 and how do you get there?
Stamp 4 is the residence permission that decouples you from the permit system: you can work for any employer without a permit, change careers freely, and build towards citizenship eligibility. The fast lane belongs to Critical Skills holders, who can apply for Stamp 4 support after two years on the permit. Other permit holders build towards long-term residence over a longer horizon through renewals. Stamp 4 is the answer to the question every permit holder eventually asks — "when does my career become fully my own?" — and for Critical Skills roles, the answer is: soon.
